A year or so ago, I posted twenty-five names that have been suggested for the next economy. While I would not claim to be vigorously scanning for additional ones, I’ve kept my eyes open. Oh, and I also picked up a few I missed in my first version. As a result, I have five to add to the list.
- Frugal: I saw a video of this idea at a Nesta meeting – this link explains the concept: basically, it talks about a bottom-up approach to value creation enabled by P2P networks and DIY platforms – emerging both from necessity (Great Recession) and desire.
- Gig: not exactly a new concept, but in an Assn of Professional Futurists discussion, I was referred to a juicy paper on the concept – alas, can only link to the abstract. It points out that while some are singing its praises, there are, well, challenges for social policy.
- Local living: the list seemed to be missing a concept that explicitly captured the local angle – one specific concept that seems to have legs comes from an attempt to build movement – see Balle, which urges us to be “localists”
- Resilient: “resiliency” is a certainly a concept on the rise. It’s probably more often used in the context of the environment and sustainability, but it is also used in reference to economics. The World Bank defines it here (although it’s not really in the spirit of post-capitalist – more on making existing approach more resilient), I think we can acknowledge a dual purpose – strengthen the old/foundation of the new.
- Second: Brian Arthur describes the second economy one as: “Digitization is creating a…vast, automatic, and invisible [economy]—thereby bringing the biggest change since the Industrial Revolution.”
