My U of Houston Futures program colleague Terry Grim calls them “Fur People.” Some may know them as pets. If you haven’t been tracking what’s going on in the world of pets, the big trend is humanization of pets, that is, pet owners are increasingly treating their pets as people–thus fur people. A key driver behind the trend is the postmodern value toward self–expression. We express our values through our pets. Our pets deserve the best, so how can we, in good conscience, serve them pet food, while we eat people. How we treat our pet expresses who we are. You see?
Another colleague, Kevin Osborn, alerted me and others of a recent New York Times piece, “A Sniff of Home Cooking for Dogs and Cats.” We were happy with ourselves for having noted that trend from some previous client work. Always nice to see the mainstream catching on. As futurists, we know that if it’s hits the New York Times, it’s in or fast approaching the mainstream, so part of our job is scouring the fringe to look for developments and alert our clients to give them a head start. So, people, fire up the skillets, Fifi is getting hungry. Andy Hines
