Last week we discussed how we’d be looking for examples of how After Capitalism is already emerging. BTW, I would totally love it if folks would share examples. Indeed, this week I’m sharing a lead from an anonymous tipster (didn’t want their name revealed, but I would prefer to fully credit you).
It’s not an actual example, but a hypothetical. The world is currently in a tizzy about ChatGPT.
My anonymous tipster suggests the all-too-likely scenario where one company “wins” the ChatGPT-related sweepstakes and dominates the market … like Google, Facebook, Apple and others have won previous tech sweepstakes. A small number of execs will get super rich but the workforce will be rather small and we will have yet another case of massive inequality in terms of the wealth distribution. So, here’s the idea and the tie to After Capitalism.
What if we made the winner, or proactively created, a utility? We can pretty easily see how this capability will be used on a massive scale so why not make it a public good from the start? Interesting idea, and again, it wasn’t my idea, but I really, really like it. These are the kinds of choices we have in front of us as we move to our next operating system. Imagine that Chat GPT sweeps over professions like stock brokers, business analysts and decreases the value of speculation. Then being applied in making laws more transparent (AI biases fixed in this scenario). Lobbying also decreases. Chat GPT clarifying priorities based on scientific data. As a result, we would have investment in businesses that generate value for real people, more equity and distributed resources and outcomes.

Ex student here! Good idea but how to do that is the real hurdle and also how to ensure the safety of it. These algorithms are properties of people/companies.
