I am happy to share a 30-minute version of my After Capitalism research. I did this last year for the 20th symposium in the Klaus Tschira Symposia series on Knowledge and Space, which was focused on “the challenges facing humans as we step into tomorrow. Uncertainty about the future is a key issue in defining the relationship between knowledge and space today.” They noted the controversies swirling around how to tackle climate change, environmental sustainability, global pandemics, social inclusion, economic prosperity, and peaceful co-existence – and how to anticipate the many unforeseen issues sure to take shape in the coming decades. This 20th symposium on Placing the Future invites scholars to shed light on theoretical challenges, methodologies, and empirical findings regarding the interplay between knowledge, space, and the future. Voila, a perfect fit for After Capitalism!
Here’s how I set the talk up with an abstract:
In addition to helping clients identify and reach their preferred futures, an important role for futurists is to help develop positive guiding images of the future for the society as a whole. Important prior research suggests that the successful societies in the past were guided by such images. Today, and over the last several decades, we have lacked such an image. This session will review the authors work in developing three such guiding images for life after the end of today’s capitalist socio-economic system. It will include a review of how futurists approach such a question and walk participants through the process used to generate these images, as well as discussing the images themselves. — Andy Hines
